Calculation Methodology, Formulas & Data Sources
VSK-IS operates with complete algorithmic and legal transparency. This document details the exact mathematical formulas, statutory frameworks, and public data sources that power all calculators on this portal.
1 Value Added Tax: Mathematical Formulas (24% Standard & 11% Reduced)
Iceland applies two statutory VAT brackets pursuant to Article 8 of Act No. 50/1988: the 24% standard rate (applied to most commercial products and services) and the 11% reduced rate (applied to foodstuffs, hotels, books, and public transport).
A. Forward VAT Calculation (Net → Gross Total)
VAT Amount (24%) = Net Base × 0.24
Gross Total = Net Base × 1.24
Example: If taxable services are invoiced at 10,000 ISK net, 2,400 ISK output VAT is added, totaling 12,400 ISK gross.
B. Backward VAT Extraction (Gross Total → Net Base & VAT)
Net Base = Gross Total / 1.24
Included VAT = Gross Total × (24 / 124) ≈ 19.3548%
For 11% items: Gross × (11 / 111) ≈ 9.9099%. Example: A retail price of 10,000 ISK includes 1,935 ISK VAT and a net base of 8,065 ISK.
2 Customs Valuation (CIF) & Import Duties (Customs Act No. 88/2005)
In accordance with Article 14 of Customs Act No. 88/2005, Iceland assesses import tariffs on the CIF basis (Cost, Insurance, and Freight). Customs duties and VAT are never levied solely on retail purchase value:
- CIF Value in ISK:
(Product Cost in Foreign Currency + Shipping) × Central Bank Customs Rate - Customs Duty:
CIF Value × Statutory Tariff Rate (0% to 20%) - VAT Assessment Base:
CIF Value + Customs Duty + applicable excise taxes - Value Added Tax (24%):
VAT Base × 0.24 - Total Landed Cost:
CIF Value + Duty + VAT + Courier Customs Clearance Fee
